A great idea that I'm currently trying out is to make yourself a banner of your site and use it as a signature with a hyperlink in it. Then go to several different forums of interest and hang out. Just make yourself known and be a part of their community while being absolutely sure that you're not doing it to solicit or advertise your website, 'cause that'll get you banned. I know I wouldn't allow that on my site.
A good rule of thumb is to hang out first, then after about a couple of weeks then put that into your signature. After more time has passed, offer to sponsor their website on your home page. 9 times out of 10 the admin(s) will love the idea of their site being advertised somewhere else and will probably offer to host a link of your site on theirs.
Basically, don't be too pushy, just be patient.
*EDIT: Speaking of which, I wouldn't mind doing that for you on my site's portal and/or home page once I get it closer to being finished if that's something you're interested in.
